Flatland is a competition by the Swiss (SBB), German (DB), and French (SNCF) national railway companies. These companies face the difficult challenge of managing traffic on complex railway networks. For instance, how should trains be routed such that they don’t block each other? And, more interestingly, how to reschedule dynamically in case of accidents or breakdowns? Flatland is about finding solutions to these problems in a simplified environment, with the goal of improving or developing solutions for railway networks and logistics in general.
